Notes - “Luther was born October 13, 1925 in Kirbyville, Texas. He led a storied childhood growing up on Turpentine camps and spent the majority of his youth in Call, Texas. Luther joined the U. S. Air Force in 1944 at the age of 19. He completed training as a B-29 Navigator and then as a Radar Observer. In 1951, after a break in service to finish his education, he was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant through the Air Force Cadet Program. Upon completion of pilot training at Perris AFB, Texas, he went on to fly the F-86 Fighter Jet. Along the way, he married his high school sweetheart, Kathleen Kent. Luther separated from the military in 1953, returning to East Texas where they raised their family of five.
“Luther wore many hats throughout his life. He loved flying and operated an aviation ground school in Kirbyville. He worked as an electrician, lab technician, bus driver, volunteer fireman, and he filmed all of the varsity football games for Kirbyville for many years. Daddy was also an avid poet penning such poignant epics as ‘Willie the One-Legged Wolf’ and ‘Johnny Rich and his Terrible OV-2.’
“Luther was, first and foremost, a teacher. He taught 6th grade at and later became the principal of Call Elementary. He taught Physics and Chemistry at Kirbyville High School, Math and Science at Martin Jr. High School and finished his teaching career at Kirbyville Jr. High School. He received his Master’s Degree in Education in 1971 from Texas A&M University. Many generations of Kirbyville students remember Mr. Dockery. He was that teacher who, though tough, genuinely cared about teaching and would always go the extra mile for any student.” [2]
