- “Evalyn Gregory Riead was the fifth of six children of James and Martha (Marlow) Gregory. She grew up on the Gregory family farm in the White Walnut area between Tamaroa and Pinckneyville. She earned a teaching certificate at (now) SIU and taught at several rural schools in Perry County. She married John W. Riead of Tamaroa on a snowy December 8, 1917. Evalyn, mother of two, lost her life in an automobile accident the day after her 67th birthday. Her gregarious personality and organizational skills are still sorely missed by family, friends and the Tamaroa community as a whole.” [1]
